F.R.A. Bitless System 3: Bitless bridles are nothing new. For centuries, riding without a bit was the standard long before people considered placing anything in a horse’s mouth. A simple rope around the horse’s head served as a halter, giving rise to the first bitless bridle. Combined with the rider’s seat, leg, weight, and tactile aids, the rider maintains contact through the reins with the horse’s head rather than its mouth. These rein aids are applied to the nose, neck and/or cheeks.
Principle of action: Pressure is applied to the nose and cheeks through direct rein action.
Sidepull: The leather noseband of this simple bridle ends on each side in a ring that also attaches the throatlash and cheekpiece. A second ring in the same position is used to attach the reins, allowing for more precise rein aids. An additional diagonal leather strap connects the noseband to the cheekpiece, preventing the noseband from shifting and enabling the rider to apply pressure to the cheeks.
Position: As with all bitless bridles, the noseband of the sidepull should sit on the solid part of the nasal bone, approximately where the nasal bone begins. The throatlash should be adjusted snugly enough to prevent the bridle from twisting but must never be fastened tightly.
Effect: The term sidepull literally means "to pull from the side", which perfectly describes how this bridle works. Opening one rein along the horse’s neck applies pressure to the opposite side of the nose, encouraging the horse to turn. Taking up both reins applies pressure to the nose, asking the horse to slow down or halt, always in combination with the rider’s other aids. The sidepull is suitable for basic lunging only when used with a lunging attachment, which is clipped to the rings normally used for the reins.
Suitability: Thanks to its direct yet uncomplicated action, the sidepull is an excellent choice for both horse and rider. It is designed to be used with light rein contact and is particularly suitable for sensitive horses. It is ideal for starting young horses under saddle, as well as for hot-blooded or highly sensitive horses. Horses that have developed anxiety or resistance to the rider’s hands may also benefit from retraining with a sidepull. Its simple design makes it easy for beginners to use, and it is an excellent choice for hacking, trail riding, and long-distance rides.
